Last week's Form Guide called Manchester City at home to Ipswich. City won it 3-2, so the call landed — and it still was not the best pick on the board, because 38 players had gone somewhere better.
FPG is simple: pick one Premier League team each round. If they win, you score points. A win is worth +1, a draw nothing and a defeat -1.
Gameweek 7 was a normal round. Two of its ten matches were derbies, and in a derby a win earns an extra point, and a draw costs one just like a defeat — how derbies score in FPG has the rest of it. One of those two then ran away with the entire week.
38 Players Went With Brighton
Thirty-eight of the 123 players who picked went with Brighton: about one in three, and the biggest crowd on a single team in any round this season. Round 1's favourite, Chelsea, pulled 22 of 101. Round 6's Newcastle managed 20 of 122. Nothing has come near this.
Brighton beat Crystal Palace 5-0 on the Sunday, 14:00 UK. Sky Sports has Brighton on 16 points from their first seven matches, with Diego Gomez's goal arriving "from fully 50 yards" (Sky Sports, as of Mon 19 Oct).
The far end of the same match: four players were on Crystal Palace, and 0-5 away in a derby left all four of them on -3, the lowest total anybody posted in the round. Palace have bigger problems than one bad Sunday. Sky Sports has them 14th with seven points from seven games and the worst defence in the Premier League, 17 goals conceded in seven matches (Sky Sports, as of Mon 19 Oct).
Ten players now have no Brighton picks left at all — each team can be picked twice a season — and 44 more are holding a single one.
3 Points, 34 Times Over
The round's top score was 3, and 34 players had it. The win was only the first part of it. Four players were on Crystal Palace — beat a team someone else backed and it's +1 more, lose to one and it's -1 more. The derby supplied the third point. Nobody beat it.
7 on Leeds, 4 on Manchester United
The other derby was Leeds v Manchester United, kicking off at the same 14:00 UK on the Sunday, and it finished 1-1. Seven players were on Leeds and four on Manchester United, and the derby does not care which end you picked: every one of those scores came out on -1.
88 Winners Out of 123 Picks
Won 88, drew 11, lost 24. Most of the field got a winner out of the ten matches, and a round that kind to the crowd is a quiet one on the table: when almost everybody wins, a win holds your place rather than improving it. Safe pick vs differential has the full case for taking the quieter team instead.
-1 on 38 Scores: The Deadline's Only Cost
Thirty-eight of the round's scores were docked. The dock is the only cost of missing the deadline: the team picked for you scores as normal, and a positive score loses a point. The full rules have the detail.
19 Points, and Nobody Within Three
The whole table, after the round: 123 players, the leader on 19, the next best on 15 — two players, four back, and nobody at all within three points of the top. Across those 123, 69 are in positive numbers, seven sit on zero and 47 are negative, with the foot of the table on -13. Four points is the entire gap between first and the chasing pair, and the round's best score was 3. Nobody closes that in one round unless the leader slips.
